Weddings at Sea

Cruise Weddings - Weddings at Sea

A wedding can be the best, and the most stressful, experience of your life. Except, of course, if you choose to tie the knot at sea. When getting married on a cruise ship, you'll have a host of professionals trained to accommodate your every need. From cakes to tuxedos, accommodations to the reception hall, you won't have to go off-board for anything. Unless of course you choose to have your reception on shore. In which case, the amenities come to you.

Custom Wedding Website & Honeymoon Registry

According to Bride's Magazine, the average cost of a wedding ranges between $20,000 and $30,000 depending on your location, and that doesn’t include the honeymoon.

By getting married on a cruise ship the bridal couple can save upwards of $15,000 on their wedding day if they get hitched at sea. Even on a luxury cruise ship, for seven nights and guests included, the total bill is only a fraction of what getting married the old-fashioned way is expected to cost.

There are a few stipulations when getting married on a cruise ship. First, the captain generally does not marry the couple (except with Princess Cruises). A wedding officiate will be provided by the cruise line for that purpose. Second, cruise weddings take place while in port, not while at sea. You can choose to get married on board when in port or at a selected location on shore. Finally, the bride and groom must be sailing on the cruise in order to get married on it. Your guests can, however, board the ship for the wedding without sailing on the cruise.

Many cruise lines provide wedding packages and coordinators to make sure that your day is special and runs smoothly. Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International, all provide wedding packages for couples sailing on their ships.  The cost of tying the knot at sea ranges from $900 to $2,400 and generally includes transportation to and from the port, wedding facilities, wedding officiant, wedding coordinator, ceremony music, flowers for the bride and groom, cake, champagne, photographer, wedding album, and dinner. Many will also arrange spa and hair appointments, as well as tuxedo rentals. Of course, each line has their own packages. For more information on the most popular cruise lines and their wedding options see more below.

Your shipboard wedding package may include…
  • Ceremony performed by a non-denominational officiant

  • Bridal bouquet with matching boutonniere for the groom

  • Sparkling wine & keepsake champagne flutes

  • Wedding cake with keepsake topper

  • Traditional two-tiered wedding cake with a bell cake topper, and coffee service

  • Cake Cutting service and champagne toast

  • Wedding March music and photography service

  • Open bar and hors d’oeuvres reception

  • Elegant sit-down luncheon in your ship’s formal restaurant

  • A live trio of musicians

  • A professionally made video of the event

Carnival Cruise Lines' "Deluxe Romance" Package - Three Carnival ships (the Spirit, Pride, and Legend) have on-board chapels, and the line limits weddings to three per port day. (Sorry, most destinations don't allow ceremonies while the ship is at sea. The one exception? The Spirit when it's in Alaska.) The line's 18 ships offer a $1,450 package that includes it all. You'll get an official civil ceremony with a bouquet for the bride and a groomsman boutonniere, a decorated aisle and a photographer (prints are extra), and pre-recorded wedding music. The package also includes a one-and-a-half hour reception in a lounge for up to 20 people, including an ice carving centerpiece, a cocktail hour with open bar and hot-and-cold hors d'oeuvres, a champagne toast with keepsake flutes, a traditional two-tiered wedding cake with a bell cake topper, and coffee service. A live trio of musicians is an extra $270 per hour for dancing, and a video is $350. When it's over, you and your guests who booked cabins stay on for a honeymoon celebration cruise, and the others disembark. Want to invite more than 20 people? Extra guests are $24 per person.

Holland America Line's "Anchors Away" package-Holland America offers a more complete-and more expensive-option for onboard ceremonies in select U.S. and Canadian cities. For $1,295, the bridal couple and their sailing guests receive priority check in, and are escorted to their staterooms by a wedding coordinator. The package includes an official civil ceremony, recorded music, a bridal bouquet of roses and orchids and a matching groom's boutonniere; a wedding cake, ceremony flowers and white linens, a bottle of champagne, a photographer (one 8x10 photograph is included), and a Holland America wedding album. A reception for up to 200 guests can also be arranged (for an extra fee, of course). Plus, if you add-on the "You May Now Dot Com" option ($375), a wedding video is placed on a private Web page for 90 days, and you'll receive a copy on CD-ROM.

Norwegian Cruise Line's "Grand Wedding" package - Book Norwegian's luncheon wedding for 25 ($2,399) and the bridal couple and their guests receive priority check in, and are escorted to their staterooms by a wedding coordinator. The package includes an official civil ceremony, a pianist, a two-tier wedding cake, a bottle of Moet & Chandon Champagne, a photographer (some prints are included), and a two-hour seated lunch reception with house wines. They have other, smaller packages too, including the "Deluxe Wedding" for $1749 that includes hors d'oeuvres instead of lunch, and the "Ultimate Wedding" for $1449 with cold canapés for 15 people.

Princess Cruises' "Weddings at Sea" packages - The first line allowed to perform legal at-sea weddings, Princess Cruises offers all-inclusive wedding packages aboard their Grand-class ships. Your ceremony is conducted by the Captain of your ship, and takes place in the onboard chapel, broadcasted by "Web Cam" so your friends and family at home can watch. The three Princess wedding packages offered include the "Diamond Package" for $2400, their most expensive option. You get a candlelit ceremony with flower arrangements and a string quartet, an orchid bouquet and boutonniere, a photographer (some prints are included), and a ceremony video. Before the wedding, the bride receives a facial and professional hair styling in the onboard salon; after the ceremony, the couple gets Dom Perignon champagne with toasting glasses, wedding cake, and a lithograph painting of the ship. The "Emerald" and "Pearl" packages are slightly less expensive and offer simpler flowers, less pricey Champagne, and fewer amenities. Couples can also choose throw a reception on board for up to 80 people; prices begin at $70 per person.

Royal Caribbean Line's "Royal Weddings" packages - Like Holland America, RCI performs ceremonies in select U.S. and Canadian cities. The "Royal Romance Duet," which costs $895, includes priority check-in for the bridal couple and their sailing guests, an escort from the pier to the stateroom, a civil ceremony with an officiant, recorded music, a bridal bouquet of three white roses tied with a ribbon, a matching boutonniere, and a photographer. (A framed 8 x 10 is also included). After the ceremony you get a wedding cake for four people and a personalized bottle of Moet Champagne. Or, for approx. $500 more, you can add extras such as a limo transfer to the ship, more elaborate flowers, and chocolate covered strawberries. Either way, you'll feel like a princess bride.

Disney Cruise Line's "Weddings at Sea" package - Disney offers weddings on their private island or on the ship. You'll get an official civil ceremony with a bouquet for the bride and a groomsman boutonniere, a photographer (one print is included), and a solo musician. The package also includes a champagne toast, and a traditional two-tiered wedding cake with a Disney cake topper. After the ceremony, you get priority seating at Palo's, champagne and strawberries in your cabin, a $100 onboard credit, and they'll even steam your dress! Disney's wedding package, including a three-night cruise, costs $3,916 per couple.
